25th Anniversary Time Capsule Opened at Contemporary
It was certainly “time to remember the magic” recently at Disney’s Contemporary Resort as three special cast members gathered to mark a very special occasion: the opening of a time capsule buried at the resort during Walt Disney World Resort’s 25th anniversary celebration.
The capusule surprised with celebratory cast member name tags, treasures of the time period, and documents marking the special celebration. Prior to the unveiling, the location of the time capsule had been marked by a plaque at the site.
According to a post on Disney Parks Blog, three “very special cast members” gathered at the resort site on October 25th to celebrate the opening of the capsule. “Earliene, Ruth Ann and Joe all celebrate their 50-year service anniversaries during The World’s Most Magical Celebration, the 50th anniversary of Walt Disney World,” according to the post.
Buried on Oct. 25, 1996, the capsule contained a number of documents related to the resort’s rededication that year. In the video of the opening, the capsule starts with a note from the 1996 team to the 2021 team: “We congratulate the current cast of Disney’s Contemporary Resort on your 50th Anniversary of making memories and and making dreams come true.”
Capsule Celebrated Contemporary Milestone
According to the Disney Parks Blog post, the capsule included a limited-edition coin commemorating the resort’s 25th year in operation. A vintage Key to the World Card, redesigned that year to celebrate the resort’s milestone, features among the most recognizable momentos in the capsule.
“Disney’s Music from the Park” CD as well as menus from the resort restaurants, an employee newspaper, a countdown to the opening of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and magazines marking the occasion also stood out in the video shared widely by Disney Parks yesterday. Cast Member Joe said that he remembered the bowtie of General Manager Charles being added, according to the post.

To close the video, the three special cast members hold the original sign that preserved the time capsules location over the last couple decades. The day was especially remarkable for Joe, as he also retired that day after starting with the company on Oct. 25, 1971.
