Disney Cruise Line Will Sail Year-Round from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale
As we have been previously reporting, Disney Cruise Line has been in talks with Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida to make it a home port for one of its ships. After months of negotiations, the Orlando Sentinel is reporting that a deal has been reached.
While it’s not known which Disney Cruise Line ship at this time will call Port Everglades home, we do know that the cruises from the new port could start in as early as October 2023.
Per reports, Disney Cruise Line has signed a 15-year deal that includes the option to extend to 30 years. It also appears that Disney Cruise Line will be sailing out of Terminal 4 at Port Everglades for two years. After that, they will have the option to add on a second terminal if desired.
Disney Cruise Line has been sailing out of Port Canaveral – near Orlando – since it’s inception in the 1990s. It added seasonal sailings out of the Port of Miami back in 2012.
The cruise line was in talks with the Port of Miami to share a new terminal that is being constructed by MSC Cruises. However, it appears that those talks broke down and Disney Cruise Line was determined to build their own terminal that would offer Guests a similar experience of what they would receive when sailing from Port Canaveral.
That is when the Broward County Commission and Port Everglades stepped in and offered them the opportunity to re-imagine a current terminal – Terminal 4 which also happens to be right near the Broward County Convention Center.
Preliminary plans released for the re-imagined Disney Cruise Line terminal at Port Everglades to be complete by the end of November 2023. Both Port Everglades and the cruise line will split the cost of the redesign.
It has already been confirmed that the all-new Disney Wish – which sets sail on its inaugural voyage in June 2022 – will call Port Canaveral its home port so its unlikely it will move to Port Everglades.
However, Disney Cruise Line also has two other new ships that are scheduled to be delivered in 2024 and 2025. It might be likely that one of these will call Port Everglades home depending on the exact date of delivery.
On a personal note, I am ecstatic that Disney Cruise Line will soon be sailing out of Port Everglades! As someone who was born and raised in Fort Lauderdale, I am excited that more people will get a chance to explore all it has to offer before setting sail on a magical Disney vacation!
