Accordingly, Bechtle was friendly, energetic, and stood out in a crowd. Her husband said, “If you went with her to an (event), people would grab her as soon as she walked in the door. She really was a go-to person. Politicians and people in business would go to her to bounce off ideas.”
Roles Throughout the Community
Indeed, Bechtle was a busy lady. She served as a volunteer on several organizations’ boards, such as the Presidio Trust, the San Francisco Opera, the National Parks Foundation, UCSF, and the War Memorial and Performing Arts Center.
Also, she was a longtime member of Charles Schwab Corporation’s Board of Directors. Plus, she served on the board for Tahoe’s Sugar Bowl Resort.
However, the San Francisco Symphony granted her longest tenure. She joined the symphony’s Board of Governors in 1984, was president from 1987 to 2001, and remained on the board until her death.
Bechtle even led her own band, Nancy and the Lambchops. They recorded their own, original song titled “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff.”
Additionally, she presented a medal at the 1960 Olympic Winter Games for Nordic ski jumping at Squaw Valley. If you would like to read more about Nancy Bechtle’s life, please visit sfchronicle.com.
