‘Lightyear’ Director Explains How The Film Connects With ‘Toy Story’ Franchise
One of Pixar’s most anticipated feature films, and sporting one of the studio’s most beloved characters, the animated giant is explaining just how this new film will fit into the canon, as Lightyear director explains how the film connects with the Toy Story franchise.
Many will know the space ranger from the Toy Story films which made him a household name; as a toy who didn’t know he was a toy, Buzz brought much hilarity to the big screen as he adjusted to life away from the expanse of space.
For many fans, Lightyear seemed to be an interesting take for the character, and many were unsure how the new film would fit into the canon of Toy Story, and how specifically the two films would be connected.
Fans will now get some new information about that connection as the Lightyear director explains how the film connects with the Toy Story franchise.
Angus MacLane is the director of the film, and spoke with Fandango about the new trailer that has shattered many viewership records, and has been one of the most talked-about pieces of movie news in recent months.
The director stated, “There’s a core idea bout Buzz that we noticed when we really drilled down looking at all of the Toy Story movies: That Buzz has a disagreement over the nature of reality.”
MacLane continued, “In the first Toy Story, he believes he’s a space ranger when Woody says he’s a toy. In the second movie, they had to bring in another Buzz Lightyear to kick jumpstart that again. And he had to convince his other self that HE was was a toy.”
This seemed to be the starting point for the development of the film, with MacLane concluding, “That was a bedrock for something we knew we needed to pay off.”
The film existed thoroughly outside of the Toy Story universe, but also somewhere within; acting as the film that would’ve inspired the toy that Andy got for his birthday.
