BREAKING NEWS: 80% of Workforce Has Returned To Disneyland!
Having spent over a year reporting on all of those beloved cast members on furlough during the pandemic, it feels so nice to be able to report some positive cast member news! According to a piece in the Whittier Daily News, nearly 15,000 employees have been added to Disneyland’s workforce!
This means that 80% of Disneyland’s workforce is back! According to the report, Disneyland currently has 25,000 cast members currently working and plans on hiring hundreds more each week. They will even be holding a job fair early next month.
According to job reports, Disneyland reported 6,000 more employees than they had in August, 10,000 more than in June and 15,000 than in March. If you’ve been following along with us you’ll know that March is when the theme parks slowly started to make plans to reopen after a yearlong coronavirus closure!
It’s a sign of progress but it should still be noted that the number of cast members is not back to its pre-pandemic levels. Before COVID, Disneyland reported 32,000 cast members meaning that the company still has 7,000 fewer employees than it did at the start of 2020.
However, by the same token, it does mean that Disneyland has brought back nearly 80% of its workforce with, if past months are anything to go by, more returning week on week.
For those interested in becoming a new cast member, Disneyland will be holding an in-person job fair at the Disneyland Hotel on November 9th and 10th. The event will take place in the exhibit hall from 9am – 3pm. Both part-time and full-time employment opportunities will be available.
When Disneyland Resort closed during the pandemic, it was forced to furlough thousands of cast members. This continued on for more than a year due to pandemic safety regulations imposed in California. The theme parks finally reopened on April 30th after a 400-day closure.
Before the pandemic, Disney boasted some 100,000 cast members at it’s US theme parks alone. Walt Disney World made up 77,000 of those with 32,000 at Disneyland. Nearly 28,000 employees had reportedly been laid off and 37,000 furloughed last Fall. By year’s end, Disneyland itself had let over 11,500 employees go with thousands more furloughed.
