Marvel Producer Confirms Rumored Comic Character Will Not Debut in ‘Eternals’
With the MCU’s next great installment hitting theaters just a few weeks away, Nate Moore, a longtime Marvel producer confirms a rumored comic character will not debut in Eternals.
It is no denying that the Marvel character known by comic fans as Dane Whitman will be appearing in November Eternals, the same cant be said, however, for his superhero persona.
Former Game of Thrones mainstay Kit Harrington was cast prior to the production of the film and has been one of the most anticipated aspects of the long-awaited Phase Four film.
What is news, however, is that Harrington won’t make his MCU debut as the long theorized Black Knight; with Chloe Zhao’s Eternals focusing on the human elements of Whitman’s character in this first appearance of the character.
Longtime Marvel producer Nate Moore, who worked as a producer on Eternals, spoke on the record with ComicBook.com at the set of the film in January of 2020; specifically giving insight on Whitman and his role in the upcoming film.
During the set visit, which took place during principal photography, Moore noted, “We think he’s interesting and a great character, and actually Kit Harrington, who just wrapped yesterday, was fantastic, but we very much explore the relationship between Dane Whitman and Sersi.”
Moore definitively concluded, “You won’t see the Ebony Blade in this movie. He’s not going to be a Black Knight necessarily, but that is something that we get to play with down the road.”
These statements should not come as a surprise for fans who have followed the film from production to promotion.
Not only has Whitman’s limited role in the marketing material for the film likely informed the character’s limited presence in the film, but these comments also remain in step with remarks made by Harrington himself in an issue of Total Film.
Harrington stated, “He’s not an Eternal. He’s a character who works with the Natural History Museum in London. But he’s not an Eternal- that’s the main takeaway!”
When discussing whether or not fans can expect a Black Knight appearance in the future, Harrington was honest about his uncertainty despite the potential in the character.
“I had read up on who he could be or might be. So there’s the possibility for a longer trajectory. And hopefully, I think this is the tip of the iceberg for my character,” Harrington concluded. “I hope. But I just don’t know, you know? I’m as in the dark as anyone else.”
Fans are likely to see Dane Whitman wield the Ebony Blade as the revered Avenger Black Knight; they may, however, have to wait until Eternals 2 for that chance.
As for this film? fans will have ten brand new heroes to meet, and that should make up for the reality that the rumored comic character will not debut in Eternals.
