More Southwest Airlines Service Disruptions Expected This Week

The carrier has cancelled 348 flights today and another 271 flights are delayed.

So what is the reason for the upheaval? At the moment, according to WESH, the airline is blaming air traffic control issues, weather and operational challenges.
This is part of an ongoing problem which saw more than 1,000 canceled flights on Sunday alone. Eight hundred flights were also cancelled on Saturday.

According to the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) a staffing shortage occurred on Friday but was in hand before the weekend and multiple airlines were impacted on Friday night by severe weather across the country. Regarding the much more far-reaching impact these events had on Southwest the FAA simply said, “some airlines continue to experience scheduling challenges due to aircraft and crews being out of place.”
No FAA air traffic staffing shortages have been reported since Friday.
Flight delays & cancellations occurred for a few hours Friday PM due to widespread severe weather, military training, & limited staffing in one area of the Jacksonville en route center.

Southwest’s case seems to be unique and WESH points out that they are the only airline to report issues of this magnitude. For comparison, both Spirit and American Airlines had just four flights that needed to be cancelled on Sunday.
