Alan Horn Stepping Down as Disney Studios’ Chief Creative Officer
End of day today, news sources started reporting that Alan Horn, one of the most powerful men in Hollywood, will be retiring as Chief Creative Officer of Disney Studios Content. Horn has been with the Walt Disney Company for over 10 years.
During his tenure, Horn helped stabilize the Disney Studios by integrating Marvel, rebooting Star Wars and more.
Insiders aren’t surprised at Horns retirement. As a matter of fact, as Variety, explains, many expected Horn to step down the same time Bob Iger did back in 2020. According to the article Iger and Horn were close with Iger even calling the studio head his “best hire.”
Horn’s last day with the Walt Disney Company will be on December 31st. During his time at Disney. Horn served as the chairman of the studios from June 2012 to May 2019. Then Horn was appointed as chief creative officer, a role he shared with Alan Bergman. Since 2021 Horn’s official title has been Chief Creative Officer of Disney Studios Content.
In a statement released to the public Horn said, “It has been my great privilege and pleasure to be able to spend these past 50 years helping creative people tell stories that move, entertain, and connect audiences around the world – and a dream come true to have the chance to do it at Disney, no less.” Horn continued, “I’m deeply thankful to Bob Iger for the opportunity he gave me and to Alan Bergman for being an incredible partner throughout this adventure, as well as to Bob Chapek for his steady leadership during these unprecedented times. I also must recognize the extraordinary leaders of our individual studios as well as our business teams and every single one of our fantastic team members. It’s never easy to say goodbye to a place you love, which is why I’ve done it slowly, but with Alan Bergman leading the way, I’m confident the incredible Studios team will keep putting magic out there for years to come.”
Current head of Disney Bob Chapek also said of Horn, “It has truly been a privilege to work with Alan over the years.” He added, “He’s led an exceptionally talented Studio team that is the best in the industry, creating some of the most beloved and iconic films of our time, and he will forever be a cherished member of our Disney family.”
At the moment, it doesn’t look as if Disney is planning to replace horn. Bergman who he has worked along side will continue in his role as the head of the film division.
Before his time at Disney horn worked in many prominent studios. He started at Embassy Communications in 1973. In 1987 Horn co-founded Castle Rock Entertainment where he stayed until 1999 when he joined Warner Bros where he served as CEO until 2011. Project that happened under his watch include Batman Begins, Harry Potter, The Shawshank Redemption, Seinfield and more!
