Disney Cast Members Receive a Pay Raise to $15/Hour

The Details
Starting Sunday, October 3, 2021, Disney workers’ pay increases to $15.00 an hour, at least. Also, this is the fifth and final pay raise due to the Disney service union contract.
A Good Housekeeping Example
Sofia Ortiz, a Disney housekeeper for the past three years, is a union leader. She recognizes the long process it took to get the pay raise. Ortiz said, “This week we get our last raise, housekeeping will be in $17.00 — I’m a housekeeper, so I’m very happy for that.”
This is an impressive pay raise, especially considering that she was making $10.50 an hour just three years ago. Ortiz continued to say, “We deserve that … here in Florida, the housing is so expensive, the gas is going up, everything is going up.”

Other Comparisons
Approximately, a Florida resident must make $21.00 per hour to afford a one-bedroom apartment, according to the National Low Income Housing Coalition. In addition, the required minimum wage for the state of Florida increased to $10.00 per hour this week.

However, Florida works toward a $15.00 per hour minimum wage. Ortiz recollects living in Central Florida on $10.00 per hour by saying, “You live check by check with $10.00, maybe you don’t have enough for your rent or your car or to eat.”

Although Walt Disney World continues to make good progress, Ortiz believes the fight is not over. “We need more money, because here in Florida, it’s very expensive, everything,” she said.
