If you guessed that this cutie can be found at the Japan Pavilion in EPCOT- You would be right!
Within the Japan pavilion you’ll find a Bijutsu-kan which translates into “fine art gallery” in Japanese. Here you’ll find the “Kawaii: Japan’s Cute Culture” exhibit. It’s in the center of the gallery at the pavilion.
The piece that Riddley shared was commissioned especially for EPCOT!
The sculpture is titled Melty Go Round and celebrates the spirit of kawaii. It was created by a Japanese artist & designer – Sebastian Masuda
The sculpture is in the shape of one of Japan’s famous Harajuku girls. The epitome of Japanese cool, the Harajuku girls are named after a small district in Tokyo known for youth fashion. It is through the Shibuya ward in Japan that kawaii became a cultural phenomenon!
If you look closely at the piece you’ll notice that its filled with a wide variety of items including jewelry, toys and tchotchkes from Masuda’s travels. It is the objects that create the pigment in this art piece. They also give a tip of the hat to traditional Japanese culture as the colors found in the sculpture represent the rich colors often found in Japanese paintings.
So pop into the Japan pavilion during your next EPCOT visit to get a close up look at this unique piece.
