$140 Million Opening Weekend for Shang-Chi
Hopes were high that Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings would break box office regards and it looks like its definitely headed that way.
According to a piece that appeared on DEADLINE this morning, the film has outperformed expectations at BOTH the global and international box offices going on to gross an estimated $139.7 million.
This breaks down as $56.2 million overseas and a NEW Labor Day record of $83.5 for four day domestic revenue. Combined (and including a Labor Day estimate) this brings the worldwide total to $139.7 million- WOW!
It’s even more impressive given that these figures DO NOT include South East Asia and China markets where an opening date has not yet been set due to COVID-19. In addition Australia is still 70% closed due to outbreaks of the virus there.
When it comes to IMAX, Shang-Chi pulled in $13.2 worldwide which also sets the global day weekend opening record. $5.2 million comes from the international market. As DEADLINE tells us, the film played on 391 IMAX screens in 66 countries.
So how is the film doing with critics? It currently has a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Congratulations “Shang-Chi!” If you’re still on the fence about whether or not to see the film, you can check out our recent review here.
