All Eyes On Shang-Chi Going Into Labor Day Weekend
As we approach Labor Day Weekend, all yes (well those in the cinema world at least) will be on how Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings performs at the box office.
The reason being is that in the pre-pandemic film industry, Labor Day weekend was sort of a no-go area for moviegoers. However, Disney, confident in the broad appeal of Marvel is taking a risk and going for a Labor Day opener.
Many insiders are predicting that this is a move that might pay off for Disney. Estimates are that Shang-Chi could open to a record-breaking $45-$50 million on opening weekend and will play in 4,500 theaters. As DEADLINE tells us, this would surpass the previous Labor Day title holder Halloween which made $30.6 million at the box office. It seems like a certain win however, the coronavirus makes it difficult to predict that enthusiasm of fans when it comes to heading back into the cinemas.
But even if we’re looking at worst case scenario and Shang-Chi underperforms at the box office, the film should still come out strong enough to be in the number one spot for the next three weekends.
It helps that the film has already generated a lot of buzz with critics and currently has a 92% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film stars Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Tony Chiu-Wai Leung, Michelle Yeoh, , Meng’er Zhang, and Benedict Wong.
According to DEADLINE, advanced ticket sales are about 20% behind what they were for Black Widow which would go on to gross $80.4 million on its opening weekend (which includes a simultaneous premiere on Disney+)
In addition, Shang-Chi is expected to open overseas today in France, Korea and Italy. Australia, Russia, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, the UK, Japan and Spain will all see the film open going into the weekend. Unfortunately Southeast Asia and China are left out of the mix as most places are closed due to COVID-19.
When looking at international markets, the film is expected to pull in $40 million which would mean the total global launch would be somewhere in the $90 million range.
We can’t wait to see the film in theaters this weekend especially since initial reactions to the film have been so positive. Previews of Shang-Chi will begin in the US on Thursday at 6pm.
This is a story that we will continue to follow closely throughout the Labor Day weekend. Readers are encouraged to keep checking back with us for further news and updates!
