ASL Available on 3 Disney+ Films with Google Chrome Extension
A new Google Chrome extension called SignUp can overlay ASL captions three different animated classics on Disney+, including Moana.
The free extension was created by Mariella Satow due to a large number of the deaf community finding written captions difficult due to their “lack of vibrancy” or not being descriptive enough, with sometimes this option not even being present on platforms.
SignUp currently offers ASL captions on Moana, The Incredibles, and Zootopia with the aim to add even more movies to their list soon, including The Little Mermaid, Frozen, and the seasonal classic, Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas.
The captions are incredibly user-friendly, with the size and location of the captions being adjustable to the viewer’s preference and instantly synch up with the movie.

SignUp’s website goes into detail about why a service like this is needed by citing a study that says “80% of children who use ASL face challenges with reading, making written captions inaccessible”.
This statistic is heartbreaking to read, knowing that so many children cannot access beloved films and characters that so many of their peers will be familiar with.
Satow and the whole SignUp team are asking for donations and through GoFundMe to help them add more movies to their catalog as well as allowing the service to work on more platforms, including Hulu and Netflix.

The money would also go to hiring more interpreters, allowing the team to achieve adding more ASL options faster as well as branching internationally to help children in the deaf community all over the world.
