Bob Chapek Discusses Fair Compensation Amidst ‘Black Widow’ Lawsuit
Much of the Marvel news this summer has revolved around former Marvel Actress, Scarlett Johansson’s legal action against The Walt Disney Company; Disney CEO Bob Chapek Discusses Fair compensation amidst the Black Widow lawsuit.
Much of the news you’ve probabnly read has centered around the Lawsuit that has embroiled both veteran Marvel actress Scarlett Johansson, and Marvel Studios parent company, Walt Disney Studios.
The shifting distribution models that have taken the film world by storm have directly impacted the way many Studios do business in the modern world; with Walt Disney Studios being the first in truly uncharted territory.
Speaking to the media, Disney CEO Bob Chapek addressed the issues that have stemmed from the Johansson lawsuit; while speaking to the way in which the studio plans to avoid the issue moving forward through their pursuit of fairness in the area of compensation.

Since COVID has begun, we’ve entered hundreds of talent arrangements with our talent and by and large, they’ve gone very very smoothly, so we expect that that would be the case going forward.
Trying to do the best thing for all out constituents and make sure that everybody whose inteh value chain… feels like they’re having their contractual commitemnets honored both from a distribution and a compensation standpoint.

Perhaps the most directly vital statement made by the executive over the course of the interview was his stating that the company has, “figured out ways to fairly compensate,” regardless of the films release methods.
The pandemic has greatly affected nearly every walk of life, but films have suffered in a very specific and incalculable way.

Moving forward, the Disney+ Premiere Access model seems to be the new normal for the company; with that potentially taking away from a films earnings at the box office, there is no choice but to rethink the ways in which talent is compensated.
Regardless of anyone’s opinion on Johansson’s legal action against the company, as Bob Chapek discusses fair compensation, the actress has clearly ignited a necessary conversation that has to be had in wake of the ever-changing distribution models in film.
