Disney Using ‘Aggressive but Measured’ Strategies to Increase Park Capacity at Both Disney World and Disneyland
We have sure come a long way since Walt Disney World reopened last Summer and Disneyland reopened earlier last year when it comes to park capacity. And, to get things back to as normal as possible, Disney confirmed yesterday during their quarterly earnings call that they are increasing park capacity “aggressively but measured” with hopes to have staffing at pre-COVID levels by the end of 2021.
During the earnings call, the CFO for the Walt Disney Company, Christine McCarthy, stated, “At Walt Disney World, third quarter capacity levels were generally at or near daily capacity levels. Disneyland Resort also steadily increased attendance and capacity following its reopening at the end of April and particularly after lifting of California state restrictions on June 15.”
McCarthy went on to say, “We’re also going to bring out capacity online aggressively but measured. We’re not just going to open up the doors and turn them open. We’re doing this in a measured fashion for health and safety of not only our Guests but also our Cast Members in the Parks.”
While Disney was openly publicizing their capacity numbers when both Walt Disney World and Disneyland reopened, they have stopped short of doing so in recent months. But, with McCarthy’s statement above and from what I have personally seen, it seems like Walt Disney World is close to being at 100% capacity already.
When it comes to resort rooms open at both resorts, Disneyland already has all three of theirs open and welcoming Guests.
At Walt Disney World, about 70% of rooms are currently available to be booked with opening dates announced for all remaining Resort Hotels by the end of the year.
Bob Chapek, CEO of the Walt Disney Company, stated during the earnings call, “In California, we’ve got all three of our hotels open for example. We’ve got 70% of our available rooms opened in Walt Disney World. So you can see that we’re not quite 100% available at this point.”
While things are approaching “normal,” there are still lots of Cast Members and job positions that will need to be filled. But, Disney is actively working to bring back Cast Members who were furloughed and laid off due to the pandemic.
McCarthy said during the call, “We’re expecting to have out parks domestically be fully staffed by the end of this calendar year.”
Make sure to keep it here with MickeyBlog as we continue to monitor capacity increases and the return to “normal” at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland.
