James Gunn Calls Out Martin Scorsese For Marvel Criticism
One of the most accomplished, and easily recognizable, filmed directors of contemporary cinema is also employed by Marvel and DC; it appears now that James Gunn calls out Martin Scorsese for Marvel Criticism.
James Gunn has had a remarkable career, beginning as the write on films like Scooby-doo, Scooby-doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, Slither, and Dawn of the Dead; Where Gunn has separated himself, however, is the standard-bearer for excellence in the superhero genre.
Gunn’s work on the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise has influenced Marvel’s other films, and the superhero genre as a whole, in a way not seen since Sam Raimi first crafted the earliest masterpiece of the genre in the Spiderman franchise.
Gunn was recently doing press for his debut film with Warner Bros.- The Suicide Squad– when he was asked about statements legendary director Martin Scorsese made against Marvel Studios.
First reported by insider.com, Gunn commented on the statements made by first bringing light to the fact that Marvel films have become the primary machine sustaining the entire film industry.
With the immense amount of MCU releases a year, and the overwhelming crowds that come to see them, Marvel stands alone in their audience and impact on the genre of film.
In an interview recorded on the “Happy. Sad. Confused. Podcast, Gunn approached the polarizing quotes that saw Scoreses refer to Marvel movies as, “not cinema.”
Gunn noted,
I just think it seems awful cynical that he owuld keep coming out against Marvel and then that is the only thing that would get him press for his movie. He’s creating his movie in the shadow of the Marvel films, and so he usse that to get attention for somethig he wasn’t getting as much attention as he wanted for it.
The harsh words bring to light an interesting point made by Gunn; it appears as though the popularity and audience for the Marvel films make them a very successful tool for someone’s attempt to gain popularity and audience for whatever they’re doing.
Scorses has yet to comment on Gunn’s reply, but the legendary director remains one of the most accomplished film directors that has ever lived.
It is difficult to imagine a world in which Scorses takes kindly to those words, but Gunn’s comments could be very true of Scorese’s intentions with his remarks.
