The three Disney+ shorts came from the directorial guidance of animator Eric Goldberg, who created the Genie in “Aladdin” and co-directed the animated feature film, “Pocahontas.”
Veteran Disney animators Randy Haycock and Mark Henn joined Goldberg as supervisors for the three shorts. Produced by Dorothy McKim, who holds an Emmy Award and previously worked on “Prep & Landing” and “Meet the Robinsons,” the shorts begin August 11th on the Disney streaming service.
“There are so many stories of people saying they baked bread for the first time or they were learning to cook. And I know personally, I did indulge in binge watching! It affected all of us, but we’ve exaggerated certain things in these shorts; I don’t have as much trouble putting on a mask as Goofy does!” Goldberg told D23 in an exclusive interview.
The shorts took the group nine months to create and certainly take cues from the classic Goofy “How To” cartoons of the 1940s.
“By the same token, I think we went for a slightly more modern-looking style. We didn’t want it to feel like it came directly from 1942. So, the backgrounds that clean up and background artist Lureline Weatherly did are more graphic, and we put a slightly thicker outline on Goofy—just to bring it into today’s world a little bit more. But the spirit of it hopefully remains the same, “ Goldberg said in the interview.
