Disney Execs Pull Out of CinemaCon Due To Rise in Vegas COVID Cases
According to a post earlier this afternoon from CNBC, Walt Disney executives have made the decision to skip-out on this year’s CinemaCon event in Las Vegas.
The event was slated to take place next month and is held by the National Association of Theater Owners.
The event is going to be held at Caesars Palace. Disney was originally supposed to hold a staged presentation but said that they made the decision to instead screen one of its upcoming movies.
The company cited mounting concerns over the delta variant of COVID-19 which is currently spreading through many US states. This comes on the heels of criticism from NATO for Disney’s decision to screen Black Widow in theaters.
For over a decade CinemaCon has been one of the premiere events for studios and theater owners. The event was cancelled last year due to the pandemic.
So far, Disney is the only major studio to pull out of the convention. However, other studios could be impacted. CNBC reports that fewer stars are expected to show up at the event.
Last week, the White House declared southern Nevada a hotspot for COVID-19. As CNBC points out, this means that the area has a high number of cases which may result in health-care resource limitations.
Officials in Los Angeles have also warned against travelling to Nevada.
