The Return of Canadian Cruises
Initially, the federal government banned cruise ships from Canada until 2022. However, the timeline accelerates due to Canadians’ hard work during the pandemic and high vaccination rates.
Alghabra said that since Canadians have worked to reduce the spread of COVID-19, it is time to restart the economy. Alghabra adds, “We will welcome cruise ships…back in Canadian waters for the 2022 season.”

Also, the November 1, 2021 start date aligns with the United States’ cruise plans. A full season returns in 2022; however, Canadians should not travel on cruise ships outside of the country.

An Economy Without Cruises
In March 2020, the Canadian government banned cruises due to the pandemic. Indeed, the decision devastated the $4-billion industry that generates about 30,000 jobs.
So, what has saved, or at least sustained Canada’s economy? Lisa Help, Mayor of Victoria, believes the credit belongs to residents shopping local and supporting businesses.

B.C. Transportation Minister Rob Fleming believes the government’s decision is “based on science and evidence.” Indeed, the cruise industry helps Canada continue to recover from the pandemic.

U.S. Sailings
However, Omar Alghabra thinks it unlikely for large cruise liners to dock in Canada in 2021. Instead, this announcement provides certainty for large cruise lines to include Canada in their international 2022 schedules.

On the other hand, smaller cruise lines may arrive in Canada by the end of the year. Indeed, the federal and provincial transport ministers are working with the U.S. to ensure that U.S. cruise lines return to Canadian ports.

Canada’s federal government works closely with health experts, as well as B.C. health officials, to narrow down specific health requirements for cruise lines and travelers. Everyone is anxious for cruises to return across the world.
