The Dora Milaje Experience at Avengers Campus
Disney Parks’ live stream of the Avengers Campus Opening Ceremony at Disney California Adventure left us stunned. We were blown away by the details, the characters, and the larger-than-life storytelling in this amazing new land. From Spider-Man slinging himself overhead to chicken shawarma, this immersive new Campus is nothing short of awe-inspiring.

One experience that impressed us was the appearance of General Okoye and the Dora Milaje in the Ancient Sanctum.

The Dora Milaje
The Dora Milaje are a troop of Wakandan special forces. A group of tribal women who served as bodyguards to King T’Chaka during his reign as the Black Panther and, subsequently, T’Challa.
The Warrior Experience
On the Avengers Campus, Okoye and several other members of the Dora appear in a dazzling display of spear-wielding strength, warrior-like martial arts, and tribal dancing. The fierce women are a formidable sight in their traditional uniforms, which were inspired largely by African tribal sources with some Filipino and Japanese elements incorporated.

The Opening Ceremony told us about a “training workshop” with the Dora Milaje; a sort of informal chat session between Okoye and guests.

General Okoye will ask guests questions and respond to answers on a conversational level, making each group’s experience unique. Dare we say this feels like Jedi Training meets Turtle Talk With Crush, but with fierce warrior women?

Show Director Deena Selenow talked about creating the experience, stating that it was important to the creative team that the guest experience be “authentic” with “a feeling of human to human connection”. She explained that although the Dora are “larger than life”, they want to give guests the feeling that being a hero like them is achievable.

General Okoye will do her best to impart the Dora traditions and values to create a “new generation of warrior allies”, ready and waiting to step up as heros should the need arise.
