‘Cruella’ Has Lukewarm Opening at Box Office With $27 Million Debut
Disney’s live-action Cruella opened on Friday to much fanfare with critics and audiences alike. It currently has a 73% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. So how much did it rake in at the box office? Forbes tells us this morning that numbers are in and they’re a little underwhelming.
The film stars Emma Stone as a young Cruella de Vil and Emma Thompson as her fashion mentor and rival. The film cost $100 million to make and earned $21.3 million over the Fri-Sun frame and $26.5 million over the Fri-Mon holiday weekend.
As Forbes tells us, it wasn’t the high earner going into Memorial Day weekend, A Quiet Place II was. However, it should be noted that the box office figures do not reflect streaming performance. As we previously mentioned here at MickeyBlog the film was released simultaneously in theaters as well as the Disney+ streaming network where subscribers paid a Premier Access fee of $29.99 per household.
The future may still be bright for the film as Disney’s intention is to keep it in theaters for a while. With this in mind, a great marker is Raya and the Last Dragon which earned six times it’s original debut of $8.7 million taking in $51 million after lengthening its run.
So how well is Cruella expected to earn in the long run? Forbes predicts somewhere in the ballpark between $52 million and $78 million in the domestic box office.
Forbes also argues that film is at a slight disadvantage in that it doesn’t skew toward teen and adult audiences who have already been vaccinated. That means despite the good reviews, the A Cinemascore and the star power of Emma Stone, families may still be hesitant to bring little ones to the theater!

CRUELLA
Emma Stone as Cruella
It’s this last factor that may have informed Disney’s decision to have films like Cruella along with Black Widow and Jungle Cruise open both in Cinemas and Disney+ in the hopes that those whole still view going to the movies with a bit of trepidation may instead enjoy these films at home.
However, it remains to be seen whether Disney manages to overcome a lackluster opening and whether the House of Mouse’s other Summer releases will bring in the big numbers. The alternative is that for the first time in a long-time Disney finds itself outmatched when it comes to films like A Quiet Place II, In the Heights, Hotel Transylvania and more.
