Airlines Reporting That Leisure Air Travel Is Back to 2019 Levels
Recent research has show that demand for domestic leisure air travel is back to 2019 levels. Several airlines, including American Airlines and United, are reporting key metrics that show demand has caught up to pre-pandemic years.
During the Wolfe Research Transportation and Industrials Conference on Tuesday, Chief Revenue Officer for American Airlines Vasu Raja said,
“I would say there is not even pent-up leisure demand, it’s just out in the open leisure demand.”
Alaska Airlines is also reporting the same news. In a recent regulatory filing, the airline reported that demand for domestic leisure travel has reached 2019 levels. They also reported that their pre-tax margin will breakeven this quarter and is projected to turn positive next quarter. Delta and Hawaiian Airlines both reported revenues that exceeded expectations in the second quarter. In addition to demand being back to pre-pandemic levels, the amount passengers pay on average per mile flown has also returned to 2019 levels.
The demand for leisure travel is high. Guests planning a Disney World vacation are seeing resorts with little-to-no availability and Park Pass Reservations are quickly filling up through summer. In addition, with the full reopening of Disneyland in June, many Americans will be taking to the skies very soon. There is no doubt about it, people are ready to adventure again!
