Star Wars: Rey’s Return Coming?
Will Rey Skywalker Return? And Where Would She Pop Up?
File Under: Fingers crossed (but not holding my breath)

So, how do we go from Daisy Ridley saying “I think that’s a bye-bye for now” to Star Wars to a headline like, “Exclusive: Daisy Ridley In Talks For A Return To Star Wars.”
Rumors. That’s how.

Indulging In The Rumor
That said, I will fully admit that I completely ignore many rumors, and I almost ignored this one. However, Rey is VERY close to my heart. So, I will allow myself this indulgence.
Three days ago, Drew Dietsch of Giant Freakin Robot posted:

Thanks to some inside info from our most trusted and proven source, we have learned that Daisy Ridley is currently in talks with the powers-that-be at Disney and Lucasfilm to return as Rey in some upcoming Star Wars project. We were not able to discern just what that project would be – is it something brand new or a project we already know about? – but that she is definitely speaking to the bigwigs about coming back as Rey in the future. Just how sizable would her return be? That is another thing we could not parse from the information we were given, but it is undeniable that Daisy Ridley is in the midst of talking to Disney.”
Building On Earlier Speculation
Now, a little over a year ago, I posted on DisneyBuzz.com:

Now, I will say that there is more in canon about Rey’s origin than you’d find if you only watch the movies.
However, I am fascinated by how Rey Palpatine came to be born (i.e., Rey’s heroic parents). And — note the tinfoil hat, BTW — thinking about where Ben Solo’s hand was when he healed Rey, I believe that there could be a little Skywalker on the way if we pushed out nine months from the end of The Rise of Skywalker. After all, Anakin Skywalker — a.k.a. Darth Vader/Ben Solo’s grandfather — had a similarly mysterious conception.
SO, if Daisy Ridley is interested, and I am not so sure that is the case, a Rey series on Disney+ seems a pretty great idea.

Meanwhile, Inverse.com speculated on how Daisy could reprise the character and how that return could be destined for The Mandalorian.
And this theory connects to the possible time jump between Mandalorian Season 2 and Season 3.
Master REY Skywalker Training Grogu?

Image: Lucasfilm
“Anyone who knows the history of Luke’s makeshift Jedi Academy knows Kylo destroyed the Jedi Temple and murdered countless students in the year 28 ABY, five years before the events of the sequel trilogy,” wrote Dais Johnston. “Grogu has to survive that in order to be trained by Rey, but if he survived one Jedi Purge, he can survive another.
“Maybe Din will pick Grogu up just before those events, allowing them to find Rey afterward to ask about continuing training.”

Maybe. It’s interesting. And I’d take it. However, that’s NOT the only way that Rey could return.
Meanwhile, I personally wonder — despite my desire to see Rey return — if more of a cooling-off period could set up Master Rey Skywalker a little easier. I mean, the Prequel Trilogy experienced a Renaissance as fans who were first exposed to Star Wars via Anakin Skywalker came of age. Couldn’t the same be true of Rey Skywalker?

In any case, we’ll be carefully watching this rumor. And hoping against hope, it’s true.
