Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K Officially Not Part of MCU Canon
Marvel fans have undoubtedly heard of the company’s newest television series coming to Hulu later this month. The streaming platform has become the home of Disney’s newest series, formed around the lesser-known character of M.O.D.O.K
The series will follow the Marvel villain in both his evil endeavors and his struggle with the monotony of everyday life.
Questions have begun to surface about what connection if any, the new series has with the greater happenings of the MCU as a whole. These questions have now seemingly been settled by the show’s executive producer, Jordan Blum.
In an interview with comicbook.com, Blum addressed the continuity questions regarding M.O.D.O.K., with the producer stating clearly, “yeah we’re our own universe.”
Blum continued, “Marvel has like a database of all the universe in the multiverse, and there’s a guy who runs it, and they let me pick the numbering of our universe.”
The producer went on to note the universe’s numbered distinction stating, “My son’s birthday, 12/26, is our universe, so we were in the Marvel multiverse, which is awesome.”
There will most certainly be division in fan’s opinions on this move, and what it means for Marvel and its future.
On the one hand, fans may be let down at the fact that M.O.D.O.K- as he will appear within the Hulu series– will not have the opportunity to interact with the characters we know and love in the MCU.
On the other hand, there is near limitless potential within the Marvel multiverse as they’re currently establishing it.
What this does is break the limits of continuity for the writers; which, for a universe so vast and quick-moving, is essential to their sustaining of it.
The idea of a multiverse is not new to the world of comics. This same way of storytelling is something that the comic industry has used in the past; likely serving as the inspiration for the MCU.
Often, a writer will create a story for a specific character and use the multiverse design in order to free themselves from having to adhere to the rules of the character’s narrative; set in place by previous writers.
The multiverse is an idea that the MCU itself will delve into during Phase 4. With the Doctor Strange sequel being titled The Multiverse of Madness, one can assume that Strange’s adventure will include varying Marvel Universe.
Fans are excited to see what Marvel has in store for the new M.O.D.O.K series and if this can become a new way to explore more obscure characters of the Marvel mythos.
You can catch M.O.D.O.K and his unique family debuting exclusively on Hulu on May 21st.
