Florida’s Orange County Reports First Tourism Tax Revenue Increase In Over a Year
Florida’s Orange County has reported an increase in tourism tax revenue for the first time since the pandemic began. The news is a strong indication that Americans are starting to travel again and should continue to do so in the upcoming months.
The Orange County Comptrollers Office reported that tourism development tax collections (TDT) were up 29.6% in March when compared to the same time period last year. The county collected $17.6 million during the month of March, the best they’ve seen since the pandemic shut down many tourist spots in March of last year.
This news comes shortly after Destination Analysts reported that 87% of Americans plan to travel this summer, with 50% of those people considering Orlando as their destination. During a coronavirus update on Thursday, Comptroller Phil Diamond stated,
“Obviously, all of this is very positive news. Very good news. Very good news for all those people who rely on the tourism industry for their jobs and for their livelihoods”
Spring Break crowds at Disney World were some of the highest we’ve seen since the reopening of the central Florida theme park in July, so it’s no surprise that tourism tax revenue is up. We anticipate to see crowds remaining steady throughout the summer. Americans are ready to travel again and the proof is in the numbers.
