Check Out Awesome Ways Cast Members Striving to Reduce Waste at Disney World
Just because Earth Day has come and gone doesn’t mean that the spotlight on the incredible ways that Disney works all year round to promote sustainability, environmentalism and conservation has gone out! As a matter of fact, Disney just released a piece this morning showcasing steps cast members are taking to reduce waste and Walt Disney World.
Upcycled Cast Member Costumes Rooted in Conservation
A great example of upcycling at work are the new “costumes” cast members are sporting at Disney theme parks and resorts. For those unfamiliar, upcycling is the term given to transforming waste into something that can be useful.
You can see upcycling in action by taking a look at these awesome aprons worn by Cast Members working at Disney’s Resorts! Not only are these super stylish (we love the monorail and Art of Animation prints) each apron is also made out of recycled plastic bottles!
According to Disney, each apron uses 50 bottles that otherwise would’ve ended up at a local landfill.
This unique opportunity to upcycle also gave the costuming teams at Walt Disney World Resort an opportunity to add some awesome new touches to the aprons that certainly enhance the magic! Look closely and you’re sure to see iconic Disney images and maybe even a character or two!
Costume Development and Implementation Manager Michelle said. “We’ve found that sweet spot to get functional and durable, vibrant fabrics with fun designs cast and guests will love.”
Composting With an Artistic Flair
But that’s not all Disney friends! Let’s talk composting. Cast members at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park created one-of-a-kind compost buckets as part of last month’s Earth Day celebrations!
As you can see from the image below, not only are the designs on these buckets super stylish, they were also made from repurposed buckets and canisters found at Disney’s eateries. Cast members were encouraged to submit their own unique designs while other cast members voted on their favorite via donates to the Disney Conservation Fund!
Responsible printing behind the scenes
One last area we wanted to mention is the way that The Walt Disney Company is making printing more sustainable. According to a recent piece on Disney Parks Blog, cast members have reduced the use of printers by 40% and are looking for more energy-efficient alternatives.
By rethinking our reliance on printers and only printing what is essential Disney is hoping to greatly reduce both toner and paper waste.
From switching to cardboard packaging for Disney Princess Dolls to harnessing the power of solar power, there are MANY steps that Disney is taking to enhance their commitment to conservation, sustainability and the environment.
