Consumer Confidence Returns To Travel Industry In What Insiders Are Dubbing ‘Revenge Travel’
Earlier this week WFTV ran a story harkening the return of “revenge travel.” Sounds serious right!? The term, recently used by Alan Fyall of Central Florida’s Rosen College of Hospitality management refers to the fact that more people are turning to travel. This is particularly true in Central Florida as more vaccinations are rolled out and tourist destinations open up!
Fyall went on to say, “People are coming back.”
Over the past year, as people waited out the coronavirus, a desire to return to a “normal” world where families could enjoy vacations at destinations like Walt Disney World and Universal has meant a huge uptick in numbers over the busy Spring Break period.
“Things over the past few weeks definitely have picked up considerably,” Fyall said.
Fyall, who has worked in the travel and tourism industry for over two decades said that industry insiders were predicting a huge upturn in travel once vaccinations started to be rolled out and that is exactly what has happened.
Summer is expected to bring even more visitors. We are seeing this already in terms of Park Pass availability at Walt Disney World which is showing Disney’s Hollywood Studios completely booked up through the month of June!
Fyall said that once consumers re-engage with travel they are more likely to book another trip. “As soon as you get in that (habit), it just gives you a little bit more confidence to re-engage with things that maybe you’ve left alone for the past year,” he said.
Dr. Sean Snaith, Director of UCF’s Institute for Economic Forecasting likes what he’s seeing in terms of an increase in travel going into Summer. “It’s looking like an economy in the midst of a robust recovery,” he said. “I think we’re in a far better place today than 99% of people would have said last April.”
More tourism to Central Florida also means more progress on the unemployment front. During this time last year, Florida’s unemployment sat at 14%. State reporting from last week suggests that it currently sits at about 4.7%.
