Marvel: Do You Already Hate US Agent? Us, Too!
Episode 2 of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier reintroduces the unlikeable US Agent…
Straight up, the most recent episode of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier was one of my least favorite 50-minutes of Disney+ TV since the service started in 2019.
And much of that hate came because I had to watch the smug, smarmy, portrayal of US Agent John Walker in the second episode of for much of its run time. The other was the multiple would-be staring contests between Anthony Mackie (Falcon) and Sebastian Stan (The Winter Soldier). But I digress.
For most of that near-hour, my hands were balled up in fists, with my brain angry with each moment Wyatt Russell carried Captain America’s shield.
Hey, I come at the reaction naturally. I genuinely love Cap. I also genuinely love Falcon. Winter Soldier, he is growing on me.
But John Walker never will.
Apparently, however; people not liking his character as the “next captain” is an honor for Russell.
“I don’t think there’s really been many MCU characters who’ve had quite the dilemma he’s had in terms of trying to fit into this sort of moralistic superhero world,” Russell said of Walker to USA Today. “He’s been thrust into this role as Captain America and he’s going to do it his way, and he wants to do it right. But his way is a very specific way that he has learned through being basically a trained human hunter. I mean, that’s what Marines are. They’re not Steve Rogers, they’re not the same. They’re not like Boy Scouts anymore. They’re a little bit more gnarly.”
You might recall that Wyatt Rusell is the son of Marvel’s Ego, himself, Kurt Russell.
But don’t worry. Unlike his beloved Disney Legend dad, young Mr. Russell expects you to hate him.
“Hopefully, they don’t hate me too much,” explained Wyatt, adding, “it would be an honor, I guess, to be disliked in the Marvel universe.”
Honor achieved, Mr. Russell. Honor achieved.
