Starting Today Magic Kingdom Is Testing Facial Recognition Technology To Check Guests In
The times, they are a changing Disney friends! Walt Disney World is currently testing out a new bit of tech at Magic Kingdom that could completely change the way that guests enter the theme parks! I give you the Facial Recognition Technology Test!
Facial Recognition Technology Test
Those planning on visiting Magic Kingdom between March 23rd and April 23rd 2021 can help Disney World test out this new form of technology at the park entrance.
In a statement that now appears on their website announcing the test, Disney says, “We’re always looking for innovative and convenient ways to improve our Guests’ experience—especially as we navigate the impact of COVID-19.” The piece goes on to say that Magic Kingdom will be conducting a limited 30-day testing of the facial recognition technology.
The technology Disney will be utilizing will capture images of guests’ faces and will convert it to a unique number which is then associated with the form of admission that guest is using for park entry.
Disney is saying that participating in this test is voluntary at this time. Those interested in participating need valid admission and a valid Disney Park Pass reservation.
Children under the age of 18 can participate providing they have the permission of guardian who is also present.
Three Step Facial Recognition Process
Disney has outlined the three steps that guests must go through when opting into the Facial Recognition Check-In.
Step 1: First locate and line up at the Facial Recognition Test Lane. This will be clearly marked at the front entrance to Magic Kingdom.
Step 2: Remove accessories. Guests are required to move hats, visors and sunglasses before approaching the facial recognition test zone but masks MUST remain on at all times.
Step 3: Face The Camera. Once in the Facial Recognition Test Zone, guests must stand facing the camera with your MagicBand or admission ticket close to the scanner to activate the process. The camera will then capture an image which will be converted to a number that will be linked to your ticket account.
You’re All Set!
If you return to Magic Kingdom park during our limited-time test, consider entering using the same designated entry points. Re-entering through the same lanes helps Disney better understand how the technology works.
A Note About Data
Disney says on their Facial Recognition page that they have taken technical, administrative and physical security measures to protect Guest information from unauthorized access, disclosure, use and modification. They also advise that images captured for the technology will be discarded within 30 days of the conclusion of the test. This information will not be shared with any third parties.
