Bob Chapek Addresses Firing of Gina Carano During Today’s Shareholders Call
If you’ve been following along with MickeyBlog, you’ll know that earlier today The Walt Disney Company held their annual shareholders call. Disney used this as an opportunity to reveal that Disney+ streaming had surpassed 100 million subscribers, that Disneyland should re-open at the end of April and that Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure will launch at EPCOT on October 1, 2021 the start of Walt Disney World’s 50th Anniversary Celebration.
At the end of the meeting Disney CEO Bob Chapek remained on the line for shareholder questions when the topic of Gina Carano’s termination from The Mandalorian came up. According to a recent piece in DEADLINE a shareholder accused Hollywood and by extension Disney of having a double standard in firing Carano because of her conservative leanings.
Chapek replied that he didn’t see Disney as characterizing itself as left-leaning or right-leaning. He added that Disney stands, for values that are universal: respect, decency, integrity and inclusion and we seek to have the content that we make reflective of the rich diversity of the world we live in. And I think that’s a world we should all live in harmony and peace.”
The actress was let go from The Mandalorian earlier this year after she took to social media that compared the current political climate in the U.S. to Nazi Germany. At the time the tweet was labelled as “abhorrent” by Lucasfilm. Quickly after the #FireGinaCarano handle began to trend on social media before she was eventually let go from her contract.
Since then, Carano has been outspoken about what she sees as a double-standard when it comes to expressing conservative views over liberal views.
Chapek also took time during the call to discuss Lucasfilm Chief Kathleen Kennedy saying that he is “absolutely thrilled” with her and the company looks forward “to having Kathy directing the activities of the entire Lucasfilm operation for many years to come.”
