Meet The Artist Behind the New Raya and the Last Dragon Mural at Downtown Disney
The wait is over Disney friends! Raya and the Last Dragon officially opens in theaters an on Disney+ starting tonight and to celebrate, a brand new mural is now on display at the Downtown Disney District at Disneyland Resort.
This stunning backdrop provides the perfect photo op and was designed by Imagineer Xiao Qing Chen who was born and raised in Malaysia.
Qing has said that her intent for the piece was to celebrate differences by respecting, accepting and embracing everyone’s uniqueness and strengths. She added, ” I love seeing how Raya, Sisu and the crew come together from different lands for a common quest. With all of their differences, each brings their own unique strength to the table. They choose to be vulnerable with one another, offering support and trust when needed during challenging times.”
When asked if her heritage has an influence on her design Qing said “Absolutely!” She added that the mural at Disneyland Resort was inspired by the art of Batik which is a fabric design made from hot wax and is common to the Southeast Asian region. The linework was created with touches of imperfections which shows us that these small differences can be beautiful even when we see them in one another.
Qing was then asked how it felt to have her design representing the film during Women’s History month to which she said, .”I am flattered and honored to have the chance to debut this piece during Women’s History Month. I am extremely thankful for the women who have lifted me this far in life, and for the global community that continues to challenge stereotypes and break barriers. I hope to contribute even a little in paving a wider road and opening more doors for future generations. Today and every day, we continue to work towards a more inclusive and empowered world.”
Don’t miss Raya and the Last Dragon on Disney+ starting TODAY (March 5th!) on Disney+. And, if you’ll be at Disneyland Resort in the days or weeks ahead, be sure to stop by to check out Qings incredible mural as well as other examples of her artwork which are currently at WonderGround Gallery.
