Joseph Gordon-Levitt Cast As Jiminy Cricket In Live-Action Pinocchio
Casting is heating up for Robert Zemeckis’ upcoming live-action take on the Disney classic Pinocchio. Yesterday, we here at MickeyBlog shared the news that Cynthia Erivo was cast as the Blue Fairy in the film and today it looks like Disney has found a new Jiminy!
According to a recent piece in The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has cast Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Jiminy Cricket. We can also confirm that Tom Hanks will be Geppetto, Luke Evans The Coachman, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth will voice Pinocchio, Keegan Michael-Key is playing Honest John and Lorraine Bracco will be playing a new character called Sofia the Seagull.
The report in THR also reveals that the film is expected to start shooting in the UK later this month which explains the sudden stream of casting news!
Gordon-Levitt most recently appeared in two Netflix films – Project Power and The Trial of the Chicago 7. What remains unclear at this stage is what characters in Zemeckis’ film will be live or CGI as previous reports suggest that the film will feature a combination of both.
All in all, this is some pretty impressive casting, made even more impressive by the fact that Disney’s live-action Pinocchio is expected to go straight to the Disney+ streaming network. However, this is perfectly in keeping with The Walt Disney Company’s increased focus on digital content and as ScreenRant says is evidence of Disney’s commitment to the service since Disney doesn’t seem to be afraid to spend-big on straight to streaming films.
As of going to print no release dates have been given for the premiere of Pinocchio though insiders are speculating that we might see the film hit Disney+ as soon as next year.
