Netflix and Disney Come Out Tops at Last Night’s Golden Globes
Though much-loved series The Mandalorian failed to come out tops at the Golden Globes yesterday, it was still a big night for The Walt Disney Company who came out second only to Netflix when it comes to total wins for the evening.
As The Street reports, both streaming networks combined took home a total of 15 trophies across the movie and television industries. As a result, both companies were a bit higher in trading this morning. Disney recently traded at $192, up 1.6%, and Netflix was at $544.20, up 1%. S&P 500 futures were up 1.1%.
Though Disney didn’t win quite as many awards as Netflix, the company did score two of the biggest wins of the night – top dramatic motion picture for Nomadland as well as best director Chloe Zhao! What a great way to kick off Women’s History Month with Zhao taking home the trophy for best director for Nomadland becoming the first Asian woman to win the Golden Globe in that category!
Pixar’s Soul also took top honors for Best Animated Feature as well as the Best Score which was written by Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and John Baptiste.
It’s not surprising that these two media giants came out tops. Their streaming operations currently rank No 1. and No. 3 worldwide. As The Street tells us, Netflix currently sits at 200 million subscribers and Disney+ has exceeded expectations earning an impressive 95 million subscribers in a little over a year.
Amazon comes in 2nd place with 200 million subscribers.
Neil Macker, an analyst from Morningstar currently put Disney’s fair value at $154. He said after the Q1 earnings report last month, “in a little over a year after launching, [Disney+] has exceeded the top end of the company’s original fiscal 2024 guidance of 60 million-90 million subscribers.” The report continues, “Disney is successfully transforming its business to deal with the ongoing evolution of the media industry.”
Congratulations to all of last night’s Golden Globe winners. With incredible titles like Raya and the Last Dragon, WandaVision, Loki, Falcon and the Winter Soldier and more, we’re optimistic that next years globes will be equally as successful for Disney!
