Date Announced For Second Season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series
Where are all my East High fans at? School will be back in session soon with Disney’s announcement that the second season of High School Musical: The Musical:The Series will debut on Friday, May 14th!
The announcement was made yesterday ahead of the virtual Television Critics Association press tour.
If you’ve been pining for a chance to reconnect with you favorite characters and “Drivers License”, (Olivia Rodrigo’s juggernaut of a song) hasn’t been enough to tide your over then you only have a little over two months to wait!
As we previously reported here at MickeyBlog, the second season will follow the East High Wildcats as they get ready to perform their spring musical Beauty and the Beast. The also go up against rival school North High in a cutthroat student theater competition. According to an official synopsis, things get a bit tense as “wigs are snatched, loyalties are tested and ballads are belted.”
The series will mark the return of some of our most beloved characters with a few new (but familiar faces including Derek Hough, Asher Angel (Andi Mack) , Dear Evan Hansen’s Andrew Barth Feldman, Roman Banks and Olivia Rose Keegan.
With Beauty and the Beast as the musical, fans can expect iconic musical numbers from the film as well as original songs. And of course, Olivia Rodrigo, who has become a huge star after the release of “Drivers License,” and Joshua Bassett who also penned original solos for season 2. will be back and we suspect tensions will be high!
We’ve also got some fantastic news that may lessen the wait! Executive Producer Tim Federle told Entertainment Tonight that to help pass the time, they will be releasing a series of short videos! He said, “We knew that with shutdowns and new protocols around filming, season 2 would debut later than we’d originally anticipated. So creating these little in-between videos was a way to remind the audience where the characters are, right after the season 1 finale.”
We know that the videos will feature the entire cast with the action picking up after opening night of High School Musical. Federle told ET that the shorts will even have some insights in terms of what we can expect from Season 2.
“The entire season starts with a video the kids make — ‘Something in the Air’ — for East High Drama Club’s new Instagram handle, so we def[initely] dip a toe in the social media waters,” he revealed, teasing that season 2 will be “juicy.” “Instagram was the place, by the way, where Olivia and Josh first started posting their real-life original songs, which led them to write for the show. Art imitates life!”
Also returning for Season 2 will be Matt Cornett, Sofia Wylie, Larry Saperstein, Julie Lester, Dara Renee, Frankie Rodriguez, Joe Serafini, Mark St. Cyr and Kate Reinders.
