EA Games Is Making Billions Off Of Star Wars Titles
The Force is strong when it comes with Star Wars gaming titles according to a recent piece on We Got This Covered. EA games, which signed a deal with Disney back in 2013 for exclusive rights to the Star Wars franchise in gaming said during a recent investors call that their total earnings exceeded $3 billion across Star Wars titles!
Much of these profits can be chalked up to the popularity of Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes according to CEO Andrew Wilson also with Jedi: Fallen Order, Squadrons and Battlefront.
If all that sounds too good to be true there is one caveat, with the establishment of Lucasfilm Games in 2021, EA’s contract with Disney is no longer valid. This means that competitors can now get a slice of the Star Wars gamine pie. However, Wilson says EA’s in a good position just now as subsidiary studios will continue to produce Star Wars experiences in the years to come.
Wilson, speaking to The Motley Fool said, “In terms of Star Wars, I don’t think you should imagine that the fact that some other people will build some Star Wars games is going to change our commitment to that IP or our ability to build the appropriate number of games.:” The CEO continued, “And as I said before, we’ve had a long partnership with Disney, both before our exclusive period that gave us a great opportunity to really establish some very strong franchises like Battlefront, like Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes, like Jedi: Fallen Order, like Squadrons. You should expect us to continue to invest in our Star Wars relationship.”
