Disneyland Vaccination Site Under Weather Watch
“Winter storm” isn’t something you expect to cause closures in Southern California, but that’s just the concern facing the Orange County Health Care Agency right now.
Winter Storm Watch
As reported by Spectrum News 1, a forecasted storm is threatening the region’s two largest Covid-19 vaccination sites at Disneyland and Soka University.

We are watching the storms closely at this time,” Orange County Health Care Agency spokeswoman Molly Nichelson said in an email to Spectrum News 1. “We will inform registrants and staff should we close either or both Super POD sites.”
The storm is expected late Thursday, threatening the sites’ operations on Friday, when the heaviest downpour and flash flooding is predicted.

The tented vaccination location at Disneyland Resort is located in the north end of the Toy Story parking lot at the corner of West Katella Avenue and South Harbor Boulevard. The lot remained largely empty since the closure of Disneyland in March.

Super POD Sites
Five outdoor sites were chosen as point-of-dispensing (POD) sites. The open space allows for the greatest physical distancing and ample parking, accommodating thousands of people per day. The Disneyland and Soka University locations are the first to be operational. The Disneyland location has vaccinated around 3000 people each day.
The mass capacity sites, deemed “Super PODs”, are the key component to a health care agency trying to vaccinate a county of 3.1 million, a campaign called “Operation Independence”.

But those outdoor settings have drawbacks. Weather has closed the Disneyland site three times since it opened on January 13th. While rain is rare in southern California, high winds are not, causing all three previous closures.

Other Options
Orange County’s Board of Supervisors points out the Health Care Agency’s Super PODs are not the only way to receive a vaccine.
I want to make it clear, because there’s a lot of confusion, that the county is not the only health entity that can provide vaccines. In fact, 80% of vaccine doses provided were provided (by the state) directly to the different health care systems, Andrew Do, chairman of Orange County’s Board of Supervisors, told the Orange County Register.
