Disney+ Puts Racist Stereotype Warnings At The Start Of Several of It’s Older Films
Disney+ wants you to know that stories matter. They also want you to know that some of the earliest films to come from Walt Disney Animation Studios have not aged well and are deemed culturally insensitive. This is part of a new initiative where Disney+ is attaching unskippable warnings to several of its older films notifying viewers about racist stereotypes found in the films.
The new warning is up for :30 before select movies begin. It advises viewers that the upcoming program ““includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or culture.” Some of the films where you’ll find the warnings include:
- Peter Pan
- Dumbo
- The Jungle Book
- Aladdin
- Swiss Family Robinson
- Lady and the Tramp
- The Aristocats
The advisory reads, “These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now.” It continues, “Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it, and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together.” Guests are then directed to visit disney.com/storiesmatter to expand on their initiative to create more inclusive media and accurately represent the cultures left off-screen. This is a story that we’ll continue to follow closely here at MickeyBlog as Disney+ takes further steps to acknowledge the negative stereotypes in its content. If any additional titles are added to the list we will let you know so keep following along!
