Getting. Closer. And. Closer.

It’s been over two years since reports came out that Disney would be working on a live-action adaptation of the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Well, thanks to Josh Gad (Beauty and the Beast), we have a small update.
Gad, who is on board the project as a producer, took to Twitter to let someone know that casting is eminent.
Now, I know the update is very brief, but this means either a director is in talks or very likely already signed on the project and then an announcement could come soon, and then a casting search will soon follow. Gad was rumored to be also in consideration to play the lead role, Quasimodo.
Great Gad News
I mean, what great news – right? Of course, Josh Gad continues to be a nearly inexhaustible source of Disney goodness, and any new project will get fans excited.
But who better to play the titular character of the epic story?
A little more background from the 2019 Deadline story:
The new film will pull from that 1996 animated film and the Hugo novel but not the stage production that Schwartz and Menken collaborated on in Europe. David Hoberman, who runs Mandeville with Todd Lieberman, has been fixated on a live-action Hunchback for over 30 years going back to when he was Disney film president. An early attempt led to the animated film and another resulted in a limited TV series on ABC. Now it has come back around as a feature film, and while it is early and not on the Disney release calendar, Hunchback has some of the most storied players from the stage and musical realms.
We’re looking forward to hearing more about this project as news becomes available. Keep it here (and there).
