‘Soul’ Wins Christmas Week According to Nielsen Streaming Ranking
Pixar’s Christmas release, Soul, wins the Christmas week amidst streaming war with its debut on Disney+.
The newest Pixar film made history according to Nielsen’s weekly U.S. streaming rankings, finishing number one for all titles released from December 21st to the 27th.
The film logged a remarkable 1.669 billion minutes of streaming. This number edges out The Office’s 1.434 billion minutes amidst its closing months on the Netflix streaming service; as the beloved NBC sitcom has returned to its home studio’s newly debut streaming service, Peacock.
The Pixar film wasn’t the only Disney property, or Disney+ exclusive title to reach the top ten in Nielsen’s ranking. Adored Disney Series The Mandalorian was fifth with near a billion views on the season finale of its second season. Following a week in which it topped the chart.
The newest animated release was up against stiff conception for the top spot; beating out several films from some of the biggest names in streaming. This includes the highly-anticipated Wonder Woman sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, debuting on the emerging HBO Max, and The Midnight Sky, debuting on Netflix- a streaming service that also saw its newest series, Bridgerton, record strong numbers.
Soul was a highly anticipated Pixar release that suffered the same fate as most films are currently, as the COVID-19 pandemic has deteriorated the theatre presence, and brought a heightened reliance on streaming service. This surplus of competition makes Disney’s Christmas week win even more remarkable.
The pandemic forced Disney to make several scheduled film releases shift their destination to a streaming-only release. Soul followed the heels of Disney owned properties such as Pixar’s Onward, recorded Broadway production of famed musical Hamilton, and the debut of Disney live-action adaptation of Mulan.
