Lin-Manuel Miranda Shares New Details On Upcoming Project ‘Encanto’
One of the big things that got movie fans super excited during Disney’s Investor’s Day Call a few weeks ago was news about a new film project Lin-Manuel Miranda has been working on for the House of Mouse. ‘Encanto’ will feature songs written by Miranda and will be directed by Byron Howard and Jared Bush (Zootopia) for Walt Disney Animation Studios.
We also know that the film will center around a young girl and her family in Colombia. Her family has magical powers but she sadly does not. Encant in English means ‘charm’ and it will be the third Disney film in the last five years to feature a woman of color as the lead! (Other films included Moana and the upcoming Raya and the Last Dragon.)
During a recent conversation with io9, Miranda shared a few things that he believes will set “Encanto” apart from other Disney musicals.
According to Miranda, rather than having one or two protagonists, the film will take a more multi-generational approach to storytelling. He elaborates, “We were like, ‘We really want to tell a family, an intergenerational family story with all the complexity that brings.'” Miranda continues “So often when you get into story mode, it turns into the hero and the quest-and you lose characters, then you lose complexity because everything becomes the quest.”
Miranda said the the family characters don’t disappear into the woodwork in “Encanto.” Miranda adds, “It’s been really fun to sort of write, you know, musical family dynamics in a really fun and complicated way. I’m really excited for the world to finally see it,”
The film will be the next Walt Disney Animation feature film after Raya and the Last Dragon. Miranda advised the the film has been in development since 2016. This is in sharp contrast to Miranda’s involvement with previous production Moana where he was brought in to work on the project after production was already underway. In the interview with io9, Miranda said that has made the project that much more gratifying for him adding, “[Encanto’s] been really fulfilling to have worked on. It’ll be three years by the time the movie comes out.” He continues “And I’m still writing! Like, as soon as I hang up with you, I go back to work on those songs.”
As of going to print, the film is schedule for a release on November 24,2021 and will have the distinction of being Disney’s 60th Feature Film. You can check out the clip for ‘Encanto’ that was show at Disney Investor’s Day Call here:
