Learn About Henry’s Touching Make-A-Wish Story
Over the past few weeks, we’ve been celebrating the season and Disney’s ongoing collaboration with Make-A-Wish by sharing some of the Wish Kid’s heartfelt stories. Today we have another touching tale for your Wednesday morning.
Today you’ll meet Henry whose wish was to bring toys to all of the kids receiving care at the Oregon Health and Sciences University Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.
Henry is an incredibly inspiring 18 year old who loves Pua from Moana about as much as he loves coffee. Back in June of 2018 Henry was diagnosed with cancer. During his treatment he tried to stay strong for those around him but recalls feeling scared and nervous. That was until a special nurse gifted him with a teddy bear.
Henry recalls of that special moment, “I was in a really tough place, but those teddy bears made me smile and gave me a little joy and warmth in my heart.” He continues, “I loved that and I wanted to bring that to others.”
That moment made such a lasting impact that when it was time for Henry to Make-A-Wish he opted to spread that feeling to others by gifting stuffed animals to kids at OHSU who may be feeling just as anxious and afraid as he once did.
“I remember looking in my mom’s eyes and telling her that I’d like to use my wish on a huge toy drive for the kiddos at Doernbecher’s,” said Henry. “I already have a beautiful family and I’m healthy now, so I decided I’d rather give, because that’s the greatest gift.”
Henry’s wish came true exactly one year after the hospital removed his tumor. Henry and his family were taken by limo to their local Disney Store where they picked out hundreds of toys for the kids at the ward. Cast members at the shop helped Henry load up the bags of toys for kids also gifting Henry his very own Pua Plush.
Henry was able to surprise the young cancer patients on the same floor where he received his own treatment. Patients were allowed to pick out any toy they wanted.
Henry remembers, “Seeing the reactions of the little kids filled my heart. I’m so glad I was able to make them smile, even for a little bit.” He continued, “I still get emotional now just thinking about it because it’s something I’m never going to forget.”
It’s been two years since Henry’s wish was granted and he’s doing great working as a local coffee shop barista. His selfless wish is just one of over 140,000 wishes that Disney and Make-A-Wish have been able to grant since 1980.
