Is a ‘Firefly’ Reboot Coming to Disney+?
If you were a fly on the wall during Disney’s Investors Call broadcast last Thursday, you would’ve seen me clapping my hands in delight at all of the incredible shows that are coming to Disney+ in the not-too-distant future. We’re getting everything from a show devoted to Dug from Pixar’s Up to an Ahsoka Tano series and dozens more awesome projects in between.
Though there was no mention last week of Joss Whedon’s cult-classic Firefly series making a comeback on Disney’s streaming network, let me be among the first to say – I AM HERE FOR IT!
According to a recent piece in LRM Online, buzz is starting to circulate that their might be a future for the series and it might be with the House of Mouse! With Disney’s recent acquisition of Fox, the Walt Disney Company now owns the rights to the franchise. According to a recent piece by GiantFreakingRobot, Disney is already considering a reboot for their streaming network.
The piece above states:
“My source tells me that Disney is in early development on a Firefly reboot. The new show would start the story of Captain Mal Reynolds and his crew aboard the Serenity over from scratch, with an aim to make this a long-running series on Disney+. There is a twist here and the twist is that they see the show as ideal family-friendly programming for Disney+. My source tells me they’re planning to target it more at a PG-adventure, family audience and less at the sort of PG-13 dynamic the original Joss Whedon show went for.”
So it definitely seems like a slightly different more family-friendly reboot of the program. What remains unclear is what involvement if any Joss Whedon would have in the project. With a shift in theming to something more family-friendly he may opt out. However, Whedon has already previously worked on Disney projects having directed Marvel’s The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron. He is also co-creator of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Yet, Whedon has found himself in considerable hot water as of late after Justice League actor Ray Fisher leveled accusations against Whedon and Warner Brothers for on-set misconduct which allegedly included on-set abuse. This may hinder his involvement in projects or make Disney hesitant to push for a project so closely associated with the creator/director.
For those unfamiliar, Firefly was an American space Western drama that was created by Whedon. it was set in the year 2517 at which time humans discovered a new star system. The show followed the crew of the Serenity each with very different ways of viewing their place in the universe. The crew lives on the fringes of society in a newly expanded universe. The only two surviving superpowers the USA and China have joined together to form one massive government referred to simply as the Alliance.
The series only ran for 1 Season back in 2002 and was also expanded into a feature-length film which failed to deliver at the box office. However, Firefly has since gone on to have a cult following with many fans hoping for a reboot of some form. With recent plans to revamp Buffy the Vampire Slayer another cult hit of Whedon’s the time seems to be right!
