Marvel Will NOT Recast the Role of Black Panther After Chadwick Boseman’s Death
If you’ve been following along with MickeyBlog, you’ll know that yesterday was Disney’s Investors Day call and among the announcements shared by Marvel president Kevin Feige as the news that Black Panther will continue as a franchise but that the iconic titular character WILL NOT be recast.
As you know the role of Black Panther was played by the late Chadwick Bosemen who passed away from cancer in August. Feige said during the presentation, “(Boseman’s) portrayal of T’Challa the Black Panther is iconic and transcends any iteration of the character in any other medium from Marvel’s past, and it’s for that reason, that we will not react the character.”

But that doesn’t mean an end to the franchise. Feige continued, “However, to honor the legacy that Chad helped us build, we want to continue to explore the world of Wakanda and all the rich and varied characters introduced in the first film.” With that in mind Marvel Studios announced that Black Panther 2 will indeed be happening.
The sequel is scheduled for release on July 8, 2022. Feige also revealed that the project will be written and directed by Ryan Coogler.
We are delighted to hear that the franchise will continue whilst honoring Boseman’s incredible legacy. As CNN tells us, the original Black Panther film made more than $1 billion globally in less than a month after the 2018 release.
Coogler spoke out after Boseman’s death saying that he was on of the people that had no previous knowledge of Boseman’s illness. “Because he was a caretaker, a leader, and a man of faith, dignity and pride, he shielded his collaborators from his suffering,” Coogler wrote. “He lived a beautiful life. And he made great art.”
