Certain Orlando Area Residents May Start Receiving COVID-19 Vaccinations Early Next Week
Is this the light at the end of the pandemic tunnel we have all been waiting for? Pending official approval from the FDA, the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccination might be available to select Orlando area residents as early as Monday or Tuesday of next week.
Last night, a panel of leading health experts overwhelming recommended the COVID-19 vaccination to be approved by the FDA. Once the FDA official approves the vaccine with emergency use authorization, shipments of it will begin going to locations around the country within minutes including AdventHealth in the Orlando area.
Fox 35 Orlando is reporting that one of the first hospital systems in the state of Florida to receive the vaccine will be AdventHealth. AdventHealth has several locations throughout the Orlando area.
Dr. Steven Smith, with AdventHealth, stated, “Vaccine distribution would occur very rapidly, so we’re anticipating potentially as early as Monday or Tuesday of next week.
The first recipients of the COVID-19 vaccinations will most likely be residents of long term care facilities like nursing homes and health professionals on the front lines treating COVID-19. Each state has made their own guidelines on how the vaccine will be administered.
While it’s looking that the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccination will be the first to be approved by the FDA, there are also several other vaccinations in the works from other companies. The next one to be reviewed is the Moderna candidate and that process is also set to begin next week on Thursday, December 17.
One of the logistical hurdles in getting the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccination out to residents in the Orlando area is the temperature it has to be kept at. It is reported that the vaccinations must be kept at -70 degrees Celsius. However, Dr. Smith does not think they will have to store them for long.He siad, “We’re going to get them in, get them out and then another shipment will follow that.”
The Pfizer vaccine was developed in conjunction of Germany’s BioNTech and after two doses has an efficacy rate of more than 90% for those of various ages, races, and underlying per-existing health conditions.
More importantly, the vaccine is not reported to have any adverse safety issues but some who receive it might experience short-term side effects like a fever or fatigue.
United States Health Officials believe that COVID-19 vaccinations may be available to the masses as early as February 2021 and people will continue to get vaccinated into the Spring and Summer.
