Guardians of the Galaxy Won’t Start Filming Until The End Of Next Year
Last week, we here at MickeyBlog shared the news that Christ Pratt and Vin Diesel were set to reprise their roles as Star-Lord and Groot in Thor: Love and Thunder. According to a report in ScreenRant, this may be the next time we see our beloved Guardians as the third film in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise isn’t slated to start production until the end of next year.
The first Guardians film which follows a group of misfits led by Chris Pratt who come together to save the Galaxy was released in 2014 and was followed by Volume 2 in 2017.
The delay of the third (and last film) in the Guardians trilogy can be chalked up to a myriad of factors. There’s the closure of the industry due to COVID-19 earlier this year as well as the fact that James Gunn was temporarily let go as director of the franchise when videos and posts surfaced of the director making insensitive jokes. As a result Vol. 3 was put on hold, Gunn’s firing met with backlash from industry insiders and fans alike and he was eventually rehired less than a year later.
We do know that the original cast of the film will be returning to Vol 3. We also know that the script Gunn penned for the third film which he submitted before being fired and rehired is still be used with few changes.
The third film was originally supposed to be released in May of 2020 which makes the fact that shooting won’t begin until the end of next year seem like a massive stretch. However, during the drama with Gunn and Disney, the director was hired by Warner Bros to lend his magical touch to The Suicide Squad and was prioritizing that film when he was rehired by Disney.
As ScreenRant reminds us, even though we are still a year out from the start of filming for the project, some things are worth waiting or. Gunn’s rehiring is a huge positive for Guardians as many believe his involvement is integral maintaining the tone and humor of the film. Also, scheduling the project so far out means that the impacts of COVID-19 should for the most part be behind us. Few details are known about the film and it will be a couple years before it lands on the big screen, but things are looking good for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
