Disney Will Expedite Splash Mountain Transformation to ‘Princess and the Frog’
As we reported earlier this year, the iconic Splash Mountain attraction at both the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World and Disneyland Park at the Disneyland Resort would be receiving a major overhaul. With the change, Splash Mountain will no longer offer the controversial “Sound of the South” overlay and instead will feature the beautiful Tiana and the story line from the hit Disney movie, “Princess and the Frog.”
During today’s IAAPA virtual expo, Chairman of Disney Parks, Products, and Experiences Josh D’Amaro addressed the timeline on when Guests will be able to begin enjoying the “Princess and the Frog” overlay on Splash Mountain. While an exact opening date was not given, D’Amaro stated that reimaginaging will be expedited “to ensure that all who visit the company’s Parks do feel welcome as well.” He went on to say, “In the world that we find ourselves in today, optimism, innovation, and courage, they will ultimately win the day.”
Recently, Disney added the fifth key of inclusion to its well-known Four Keys that each Cast Members learns during their training process. Speeding up the process of changing Splash Mountain to feature Princess Tiana and the plot from “Princess and the Frog” falls into this key of inclusion. In addition to changing the theme of Splash Mountain (and other iconic Disney Parks attractions), Disney is also furthering relationships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities “to create a stronger pipeline to careers in finance, human resources, legal, communications, production, and technology.”
When Disney announced that Splash Mountain would be refurbished to reflect the story of Tiana and “The Princess in the Frog, they said, “The retheming of Splash Mountain is of particular importance today. The new concept is inclusive – one that all of our Guests can connect with and be inspired by, and it speaks to the diversity of the millions of people who visit our parks each year.”
