Disney Might Have Found Its Director For Live-Action Lilo & Stitch
If you’ve been following along with MickeyBlog you’ll know that Disney’s trend of making live-action adaptations of its beloved animated films shows no signs of slowing. According to insiders there are live-action remakes in the pipeline for everything from Pinocchio to Peter Pan to everything in between.
One of the remakes we’re most excited about is a version of Lilo & Stitch. That’s why we’re delighted to report that it looks like the project is gaining momentum.
Jon M. Chu the director behind hit film Crazy Rich Asians is apparently in negotiations with Disney to helm the remake according to a recent piece in The Hollywood Reporter.
The producers from the blockbuster Guy Ritchie’s version of Aladdin, Dan Line and Jonathan Eirich will be producing and Ryan Helprin has signed on as executive producer.
According to THR, a writer for the project is currently underway. A draft has already been written by Mike Van Waes but has not yet been greenlit.
The original animated film was both written and directed by Dead DeBlois and Chris Sanders who would go on to collaborate on the successful How To Train Your Dragon franchise.
The Hawaiian based story explores the bond between a human girl named Lilo and a dog-like alien named Stitch who was created to be a force of destruction. Aliens, social workers, and the idea of family bonds can all be found in this film that has become a bit of a Disney cult classic.
As of going to print, we aren’t quite sure whether the live action version of Lilo & Stitch will be released theatrically on on Disney+.
This isn’t the only upcoming Disney project for Chu. He has also signed on as director and producer for Disney’s upcoming Willow series based on the feature from Lucasfilm. Wu became in demand in Hollywood after Crazy Rich Asians went on to cross $238 million. He most recently directed In the Heights and adaptation of a musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda that will be released by Warner Bros in 2021.
