See The Science Behind the “Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom” With New Episode
Move over The Mandalorian! There’s another Disney+ series that has pride of place in my household and it also has a new episode available to view starting today. However, this one is a bit bittersweet as it marks the final instalment of an incredible TV show that has given us a whole new appreciation of the amazing animal care team at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park.
This week we take a look at what it takes for the team to learn that Kendi, a white Rhino, is expecting a brand new baby. Here’s a clip of the episode below where things get a bit “stinky!”
One of the big takeaways from the clip above is that science requires teamwork (even when it comes to smelly situations.) You can also see firsthand how committed animal keeper Jess is to her work even when it comes to rolling up her sleeves and digging through doo-doo!
All of the keepers at Disney’s Animal Kingdom work closely with the sciences team who bring their knowledge in fields like endocrinology, field research and behavioural science. As a matter of fact, many of the cast members in Disney’s sciences and conservation team even have PHDs in fields like biology and conservation. They also pass on their knowledge to zoological communities around the world.
Their knowledge has been particularly invaluable when it comes to saving endangered species. Case in point is the recent birth of a white rhino. The process was overseen by Dr. Mandi and Dr. Shana who monitored hormone levels of mom Kendi before and after pregnancy. Both doctors spent years teaching biology on the doctoral and masters levels. Dr. Mandi has a background in reproductive health and Dr. Shana as a veterinary technician.
Those working with the animals must also be keen observers to ensure that animals thrive in their environments. One such example is how the primate team learned that lowland gorilla baby Grace needed some extra help reaching her developmental milestones when it came to things like climbing. The brought in special occupational therapists who suggest ways that the team could help Grace build her muscles, coordination and confidence. Today, Grace is now holding her own with the rest of the troop and getting stronger each day!
