Disney’s Animal Kingdom Welcomes a New Baby Rhino!
We’ve got a new animal baby to share with you! This week, Disney shared that a new baby rhinoceros was born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. This was a momentous occasion in that it was only the second rhino born on the premises in the theme park’s history!
Yesterday morning, Mom Kendi gave birth to a bouncing baby boy! Check this adorable image of the mom and baby white rhinos bonding below:
Rhino calves can weigh up to a mighty 140 pounds at birth! Mom and baby are doing well and Disney even said in their press release that the baby was nursing, standing and even walking within the first hour of being born! Disney’s incredible team of animal care specialists have said that the duo will have lots of private time backstage to get acquainted before eventually joining the rest of the heard.
Kendi and baby’s dad Dugan were paired through the Species Survival Plan. This program is overseen by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and ensures the responsible breeding of endangered species. The white rhinos are endangered animals with a near-threatened status. For those following along with Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom on Disney+, future episodes will feature the pair!
In what is fantastic news for Disney’s rhino population, other rhinos at the park are also expecting. Jao is due next fall and Lola next fall/winter.
We’ll be following the progress of mom and baby closely. Readers are encouraged to keep following along with MickeyBlog for further news and updates.
