Is The Addams Family & Tim Burton Coming To Disney TV?
Will Disney and Tim Burton delve into the world of the Addams Family?
“We like it. It’s so nice and eerie.” Wednesday Addams
Might the Addams family make a “nice and eerie” home on a Disney channel? Possibly.
And a familiar name would be in charge of the Addams: Tim Burton.
In an exclusive, Thursday morning Deadline’s Justin Kroll posted:
In what would mark his first major live-action TV series, Tim Burton is setting his sights on The Addams Family, looking to develop a new series focused on the famous clan. Sources tell Deadline that Burton is negotiating to executive produce and possibly direct all episodes of this new take on the franchise. Smallville developers/executive producers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar will be head writers on the show and serve as showrunners as well as exec producers along with Burton.
MGM TV, which controls underlying rights to the IP, financed the development of the series. As of right now, the package has multiple buyers bidding for it, including Netflix, which sources say is at the top of the list of landing the project.
While not confirmed, sources say the new live-action series would be set in present times and be from the perspective of Wednesday Addams and what the world would look like to her in 2020.
Now, when I was growing up, you were either a Munsters or Addams Family person. Reruns were plentiful and some of the best shows of the 1960s were on constantly.
Being a Munsters kind of guy, I have little exposure to the Addams family through the shows or movies. However, Burton’s films earn top marks among my favorite flicks, with both Beetlejuice and Batman enjoying exalted status.
Beetlejuice was just so wildly cooky and eerie; coupled with the macabre Sleepy Hollow (and, of course, the legendary Nightmare Before Christmas) – clearly, Burton could fill the show-runners role.
Now it’s just Disney’s job to win a bidding war for the IP. A scary prospect for The Mouse, indeed.
